Family Therapy for Teens in Georgia

At Perry Behavioral Health, we don’t treat teens in isolation. We treat families. Healing a teenager means healing the family system around them, which is why family therapy for teens isn’t an add-on here. It’s a required part of every stay.

Why Family Therapy
Matters for Teens

Teens don’t struggle in a vacuum. Family dynamics, communication patterns, and home stress all shape how a teen feels and behaves, and the family is often the most powerful source of support for lasting change.

Family therapy can help:

  • Rebuild trust after conflict, secrecy, or crisis
  • Improve communication, so teens and parents can talk without every conversation turning into a fight
  • Help parents understand their teen’s mental health condition and how to respond
  • Set healthy boundaries and expectations that work at home
  • Prepare the whole family for the transition home after residential treatment
  • Support siblings and other family members affected by the crisis

Family Is Part of the Program,
Not Spectators

Too many teen programs keep families at arm’s length. At Perry, family involvement is built into the structure of treatment.

Weekly Family Sessions
  • Once a week
  • Parents, guardians, and other family members
  • Virtual or in person

Weekly sessions keep families connected to their teen’s progress and give everyone space to work through challenges together, even if you live hours away.

Monthly Family Weekends
  • One weekend a month
  • On campus in Perry, GA
  • Includes individual family therapy sessions, plus a dedicated Sunday session

During family weekends, parents stay at a nearby partner hotel, so you can be fully present without the added stress of travel logistics.

What Family Therapy Focuses On

Every family is different, but sessions often explore:

  • Family dynamics: understanding patterns at home and how they affect everyone
  • Communication skills: listening, expressing feelings, and handling conflict
  • The teen’s condition: learning about depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or suicidal ideation and how to support recovery
  • Early childhood and family history: where a lot of the story starts
  • School and social stress: how parents can support their teen through pressures at school
  • Safety planning: recognizing warning signs and knowing what to do
  • Life after treatment: routines, expectations, and aftercare at home

How Family Therapy Fits Into
Residential Treatment

Family therapy works alongside everything else your teen does at Perry:

  • Gender-specific and grade-level process groups
  • Individual therapy
  • Online schooling
  • Art therapy, clubs, and weekend outings

Because most teens stay 90 to 120 days in our residential program, families have months of consistent sessions to practice new patterns before their teen comes home.

A Day at Perry Behavioral Health

Weekdays

  • Morning: Breakfast, followed by a community group to set the tone for the day
  • Late Morning: Gender-specific group therapy (separate boys’ and girls’ groups)
  • Midday: Online schooling, so academics stay on track
  • Afternoon: Grade-level group therapy (middle school and high school separated)
  • Evening: Dinner, followed by downtime — art therapy, clubs, and activities based on what your teen actually enjoys

Weekends stay structured, with outings to nearby parks and community activities — a rhythm that feels more like normal life than a treatment facility.

An Honest Alternative

We know the reputation some adolescent programs carry — isolating kids from their families, keeping them away for long stretches with little transparency. That’s not what we do. Perry Behavioral Health is built on openness: with your child, and with you. We show you the real process, not a polished version, because trust is what makes treatment work.
